Polyurethane is used in a wide range of different products and its properties can vary widely; its specific weight varies from 8\u20131200 kg\/m3; polyurethane can have either open or closed pores; polyurethane can be hard or soft, elastic or even brittle. There are also a wide range of applications: PUR can be used to make load-bearing structures for furniture, soft seat cushions, interior car upholstery, seats and steering wheels. Polyurethane is also used to make paints, varnishes, and assembly foams.<\/p>\n<p>In industrial insulation, polyurethane is used both in cast-in-place form and as finished products, in the form of enclosures or slabs, mainly for insulating cold surfaces. Its advantage over mineral wool or polystyrene is its significantly better insulating properties and, in the event of PUR cast-in-place, the vapor barrier formed on the inner surface of the cladding, which, if properly executed, ensures a continuous vapor barrier along the entire length of the pipework (tank, equipment). Also, polyurethane insulation, in combination with cladding, is highly resistant to mechanical influences.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, polyurethane has many different variants, or systems (a system is a set of components that, when mixed in the right proportions, form a foam with specific properties). There are systems with different specific weights and different expansion gas pressures that give different results: Polyurethane with open pores: for example, assembly foams, as well as foams with a specific weight of less than 40 kg, have insulation properties close to polystyrene and wool products, as the pores are filled with air, which does not have very good insulation properties.<\/p>\n<p>The insulating properties of polyurethane foam with closed pores depend, to a large extent, on the filler gas inside the pores. This gas is formed from an expanding agent, which is a low boiling liquid, such as R11, R141b, R134a, etc. The expanding agent also affects adhesion to surfaces, for example, water, which reacts with isocyanate to form CO2 is a cheap system, but poorly adhesive to many materials below 40 \u00b0C. Moreover, CO2 does not remain in the pores for long but is replaced by air over time.<\/p>\n<p>CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons R11 and R12, were banned in 1993.<br \/>The use of HCFCs in the manufacture of insulation, such as R141b, was banned in 2000. In addition to the two main components, the mixture also contains an expanding agent, an activator, a stabiliser, and other additives, such as flame retardants.<\/p>\n<p>The use of cast-in-place PUR as insulation has advantages over other insulation materials, namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2013 closed pores, resulting in good insulating properties and low water absorbency<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 resistant to chemicals<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 dimensionally stable<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 mechanically strong<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 provides one-piece insulation without joints<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 forms a vapour-tight layer itself on the inner surface of the cover plate, so no separate vapour barrier needs to be installed<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 good adhesion to most surfaces<\/li>\n<li>\u2013 easy to install on site by pouring directly between the insulating surface and the cladding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Attention!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spraying PUR onto a surface leaves the outer surface uneven and not as vapor dense as pouring it into a mould (inside the cover plate) and, if the surface is still uncoated, the vapour dense layer will be destroyed by sunlight within a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of free expansion, the specific weight remains slightly lower, which in turn reduces the insulation performance.<\/p>\n<p>In enclosures and pre-insulated pipes, the factory-molded foam is certainly of a more stable quality than if cast on-site, but the joints are always a risk factor: for example, in the case of pre-insulated pipes, there are two joints at each welded joint, which, in the event of poor adhesion, can develop cracks where moisture will penetrate and there is no way out of the closed pores, and in case of cooling pipes, ice will form there. In case of leaking of the casing of the pre-insulated underground pipes (which may be caused, for example, by subsidence of the soil), the pressure of rising groundwater during the autumn season forces moisture into the pores and cannot be removed, except by replacing the urethane insulation.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of factory-made PUR enclosures, both cross and longitudinal joints need to be very carefully hermetically sealed. Therefore, the fewer joints, the more secure it is. Of course, the above was only true for cold insulation; in the case of heat insulation, the airtightness is not so important.<\/p>\n<p>PUR can be used in the temperature range between -120 \u00b0C and +140 \u00b0C, depending on the system.<\/p>\n<p>Polyurethane with a density of 45\u201360kg\/m3 has the best insulating performance. In this case, the thermal conductivity at different temperatures is:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u00b0C -40 = 0.026 (W\/mK)<br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C -30 = 0.025 (W\/mK)<br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C -20 = 0.024 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C -10 = 0.022 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 0 = 0.022 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 10 = 0.023 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 20 = 0.024 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 30 = 0.025 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 40 = 0.026 (W\/mK) <br \/>\u2022 \u00b0C 50 = 0.027 (W\/mK)<\/p>\n<p>Water vapor permeability \u00b5 = 120. Water absorption underwater 1% by volume. Absorption at 100% humidity 2\u20135% by weight.<\/p>\n<p>When pouring PUR, however, it must be remembered that this is a chemical reaction that only takes place correctly under the right conditions, so it must be ensured that the ambient temperature is not below +10 \u00b0C and the relative humidity of the air does not exceed 90% during the pouring of the PUR and for 24 hours after the work is completed.<\/p>\n<p>The PUR works cannot be carried out in rainy conditions. The object to be insulated must be dry. Therefore, urethane casting can be performed in dry weather in summer, but only in heated rooms in winter. Only in this case is the quality ensured.
